Aji Dulce is a mild Capsicum chinense pepper grown for its aromatic flavour and wrinkled, habanero-shaped fruit.

The plant develops a bushy, branching habit with broad green leaves and small pale flowers. The fruit begins green before ripening through shades of orange and red, depending on the particular seed line.

Aji Dulce provides much of the fruity and aromatic character associated with habanero peppers but with little or no heat. Occasional fruit may still develop a small amount of chilli heat.

The peppers are commonly used in Caribbean and Latin American cooking, particularly in sofrito, sauces, stews, rice dishes and marinades.

In the UK, Aji Dulce grows best in a greenhouse or polytunnel but can also be grown on a warm and sheltered patio.

Growing Advice

Grow your Aji Dulce in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and sunny position. Move the plant into a larger container if required to support continued growth and fruit production.

Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth. Avoid repeated wilting, particularly while the plant is flowering and carrying fruit.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young peppers appear.

Capsicum chinense varieties require steady warmth and may grow slowly during cool periods.

Plants grown outside should only be placed outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sheltered position protected from cool winds.

Aji Dulce may be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Aji Dulce can produce fruit successfully in the UK when provided with sufficient warmth and light.

Greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation offers the best chance of fully ripened fruit. Peppers may be used while green but develop a sweeter and more aromatic flavour as they mature.
