Aji Mango is a Capsicum baccatum variety grown for its orange fruit and sweet, fruity flavour.

The plant develops a branching habit with green foliage. Its white flowers usually display greenish or yellow markings characteristic of the species.

The peppers begin green before ripening to orange. They combine a fruity flavour with mild to medium heat and can be used in salsas, sauces, marinades, chutneys and cooked dishes.

The fruit is also suitable for pickling or drying to make chilli flakes and powder.

In the UK, Aji Mango grows most reliably in a greenhouse or polytunnel, where the plant can receive the warmth and long season needed for fully ripened fruit.

Growing Advice

Grow your Aji Mango in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and bright position. Transfer the plant into a larger container as it develops.

Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth. Avoid allowing the plant to wilt repeatedly, particularly while it is flowering or carrying fruit.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young peppers appear.

The branches may require support as the plant matures and develops fruit.

Plants can be moved outside during settled warm weather but should be returned under cover before night-time temperatures begin to fall.

Aji Mango may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Aji Mango can fruit successfully in the UK when provided with warmth, strong light and a sufficiently long growing season.

Fruit may be used while green, but its orange colour and fruity flavour become more developed when fully ripe.
