Aji Norteño is a Peruvian chilli variety traditionally associated with the northern regions of Peru.

The plant develops a tall, branching habit and can become considerably larger than many commonly grown chilli varieties. White flowers with greenish markings are followed by long, hanging peppers.

The fruit begins green before ripening to a dark red colour. It has a fruity flavour combined with chilli heat and can be used fresh in sauces, salsas, seafood dishes and cooked meals.

In the UK, Aji Norteño grows most reliably in a greenhouse or polytunnel due to its large size and long ripening period.

Growing Advice

Grow your Aji Norteño in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and bright position. Move the plant into a large and stable container to accommodate its mature size.

Keep the compost evenly moist throughout active growth. Avoid repeated wilting during flowering and fruit development.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young fruit appear.

The plant can become tall and widely branched, so support the main stems with canes or ties.

Aji Norteño can be moved outside during warm summer weather but will produce the most reliable crop under glass.

Plants may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position. Established plants can begin cropping earlier during the following season.

Fruiting in the UK

Aji Norteño can produce fruit in the UK, although a long growing season is required for the peppers to reach their mature dark red colour.

Greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation gives the best chance of achieving a fully ripened crop.
