Red Angels Trumpet (Brugmansia sanguinea) 2L Pot

Brugmansia sanguinea is an Andean flowering shrub grown for its hanging red and yellow trumpet-shaped flowers.

The plant develops an open, branching habit with broad green leaves. Mature plants produce tubular flowers that are commonly red with yellow or orange colouring towards the centre.

Unlike most other Brugmansia species, the flowers of Brugmansia sanguinea are generally unscented. Flowering often occurs later in the growing season and may continue into autumn under suitable conditions.

In the UK, Red Angel’s Trumpet is best grown in a large container that can be protected from frost during winter. It prefers cooler growing conditions than many lowland Brugmansia species.

Growing Advice

Grow your Red Angel’s Trumpet in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-draining compost. Move the plant into a large and stable container as it develops.

Keep the compost consistently moist during active growth, but avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Feed every one to two weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Change to a high-potassium feed once flower buds begin to develop.

Place the plant in a bright, sheltered position. Brugmansia sanguinea generally prefers moderate temperatures and may stop flowering during prolonged periods of excessive heat.

The large leaves and relatively brittle branches should be protected from strong winds.

Overwinter in a bright, frost-free greenhouse or conservatory, preferably above approximately 5°C. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows or leaves are shed.

Red Angel’s Trumpet can flower in the UK when provided with sufficient maturity, light and suitable temperatures.

Flowers are often produced from late summer into autumn. Young plants may require more than one growing season before reaching flowering size.
