Tequila is a sweet pepper variety grown for its blocky fruit and distinctive purple colouring.

The plant produces green foliage and small white flowers followed by rounded, bell-shaped peppers. The fruit begins green before developing lilac-purple colouring and eventually ripening towards red.

Tequila peppers have crisp flesh and a sweet flavour with little or no heat. They can be eaten fresh in salads, stuffed, grilled, roasted or added to cooked dishes.

In the UK, Tequila Sweet Pepper grows most reliably in a greenhouse or polytunnel but can also be grown in a warm and sheltered patio position.

Growing Advice

Grow your Tequila Sweet Pepper in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and sunny position. Move the plant into a larger container if required to support continued growth and fruit production.

Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth, particularly while the plant is flowering and developing fruit. Avoid prolonged waterlogging or allowing the plant to wilt repeatedly.

Branches may require support as the fruit develops. Plants grown outdoors should only be placed outside once the risk of frost has passed.

Tequila Sweet Pepper is normally grown as an annual in the UK, although plants may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.
