Uchu Cream is an ornamental and edible chilli variety grown for its variegated foliage and colour-changing fruit.

The leaves display cream and green patterning, which may be accompanied by purple colouring on stems and foliage. Slender peppers are held upright and begin pale cream or light green before changing through orange and eventually ripening to red.

The fruit has medium heat and can be used fresh or dried. The plant’s compact habit and patterned foliage also make it suitable for decorative container growing.

In the UK, Uchu Cream can be grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, sunny windowsill or sheltered patio position.

Growing Advice

Grow your Uchu Cream in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and bright position. Good light encourages stronger variegation and fruit colouring.

Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth but avoid waterlogging. Acclimatise indoor-grown plants gradually before placing them in strong outdoor sunlight.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young peppers appear.

The plant can remain in a relatively compact container but will benefit from additional root space if a larger crop is required.

Plants grown outside should only be moved outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.

Uchu Cream may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Uchu Cream can flower and fruit successfully in the UK when provided with warmth and strong light.

Fruit may appear in several colours at the same time because individual peppers ripen at different rates. Fully mature peppers are normally red.

The amount and pattern of variegation will vary naturally. Young plants may not yet display the full foliage and fruit colouring seen on mature specimens.
