Aji Challuaruro is a Peruvian Capsicum baccatum variety grown for its colourful, tapered fruit.

The plant develops a branching habit and produces pale flowers with the greenish or yellow markings associated with many Capsicum baccatum varieties.

The peppers can pass through shades of pale yellow, purple, orange and red as they mature. Several fruit colours may be present on the plant at the same time.

Aji Challuaruro has mild to medium heat with a fruity flavour. The peppers can be used fresh, dried or added to sauces, salsas and cooked dishes.

In the UK, Aji Challuaruro grows best in a greenhouse or polytunnel, where it can receive the long season required for fruit development.

Growing Advice

Grow your Aji Challuaruro in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and bright position. Transfer the plant into a large, stable container as it develops.

Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth. Avoid prolonged waterlogging and repeated wilting while the plant is flowering or carrying fruit.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young fruit appear.

The plant can develop long, branching stems and may require support.

Plants may be placed outside during settled warm summer weather but should be protected from cool nights and strong winds.

Aji Challuaruro may be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Aji Challuaruro can produce fruit in the UK when given sufficient warmth, light and time.

The exact sequence and intensity of fruit colours may vary between individual peppers and according to light levels and ripeness.
