Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry is a compact sweet pepper variety grown for its variegated foliage and striped fruit.

The leaves are marked with green and creamy-white variegation. The small bell-shaped peppers begin green with pale stripes before developing chocolate-brown and cherry-red colouring as they ripen.

The fruit has a crisp texture and sweet flavour with little or no heat. It can be harvested at several stages of ripeness and used fresh in salads, for snacking, roasting or cooking.

In the UK, Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry grows well in a greenhouse, polytunnel or sheltered sunny patio position. Its patterned foliage also makes it suitable for decorative container displays.

Growing Advice

Grow your Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry Pepper in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and sunny position. Good light encourages stronger variegation and fruit colouring.

Move the plant into a larger container if required to support continued growth and fruit production.

Keep the compost evenly moist, particularly while the plant is flowering and developing fruit. Avoid repeated drying and waterlogging.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young fruit appear.

Branches may require light support once carrying several peppers.

Plants grown outside should only be placed outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Choose a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds.

The plant is usually grown as an annual in the UK but may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry can fruit successfully in the UK when provided with sufficient warmth and light. Greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation provides the most reliable conditions.

The peppers can be harvested while green and striped or left to develop their mature chocolate and cherry-red colouring.
