Dulce de España is a Spanish sweet pepper variety grown for its long fruit and lack of chilli heat.

The plant develops a tall, upright habit and produces small white flowers followed by elongated peppers. Fruit begins green before ripening to red.

Under suitable conditions, the peppers can reach approximately 20 cm in length. The flesh has a sweet flavour and can be eaten at either the green or ripe red stage.

Dulce de España is suitable for eating fresh, roasting, frying, stuffing, pickling and adding to cooked dishes.

In the UK, it grows most reliably in a greenhouse or polytunnel but can also be grown on a warm and sheltered patio.

Growing Advice

Grow your Dulce de España in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and sunny position. Transfer the plant into a larger container to support its mature size and fruit crop.

Keep the compost evenly moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Irregular watering can affect fruit development, while waterlogging can damage the roots.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young peppers appear.

The tall stems and developing fruit may require support with canes.

Plants grown outside should only be placed outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sheltered, south-facing position where possible.

Dulce de España is normally grown as an annual in the UK, although plants may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Dulce de España can produce fruit successfully in the UK when provided with sufficient warmth and sunlight.

The peppers may be harvested while green or left to ripen to red. Greenhouse cultivation gives the best chance of achieving fully ripe fruit late in the season.
