Montezuma is a chilli variety grown for its long, tapered fruit and unusual mature colouring.

The plant develops green foliage and white flowers followed by slender peppers. The fruit begins green before developing reddish-brown, chocolate-brown and deep red colouring as it matures.

The peppers have medium-hot to hot heat accompanied by some sweetness. They can be used fresh or added to sauces, salsas, chilli con carne and other cooked dishes.

In the UK, Montezuma grows best in a greenhouse or polytunnel, where the plant can receive the long, warm season required for its mature fruit colour.

Growing Advice

Grow your Montezuma Chilli in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and sunny position. Transfer the plant into a large and stable container as it develops.

Keep the compost evenly moist throughout active growth. Avoid prolonged waterlogging and repeated wilting during flowering and fruit production.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young peppers appear.

Montezuma can develop tall, fruit-bearing branches and should be supported with canes or ties where necessary.

Plants may be placed outside during settled warm summer weather but should be kept sheltered from strong winds and cool night temperatures.

Montezuma is normally grown as an annual in the UK but may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Montezuma can produce fruit in the UK, although the mature brown-red colour requires sufficient warmth and time to develop.

Important Information

Montezuma peppers are hot.

Wear gloves when harvesting, cutting or preparing the peppers. Avoid touching your eyes or face and wash your hands thoroughly after handling.

Greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation provides the most reliable conditions. Peppers can be harvested before full maturity, but their final flavour and colour will be less developed.
