Passiflora edulis is a climbing subtropical fruit plant grown for its ornamental flowers and purple passionfruit.
Purple Maracuya develops slender climbing stems with glossy green leaves and coiling tendrils. Mature plants produce white and purple flowers followed by rounded fruit that changes from green to purple as it ripens.
The fruit contains aromatic orange pulp surrounding numerous edible seeds. Its sweet-sharp flavour is widely used in juices, desserts, sauces, cocktails and fresh fruit dishes.
In the UK, Purple Maracuya is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be moved under cover during winter.

Growing Advice
Grow your Purple Maracuya in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-draining compost. Provide a trellis, wires or another sturdy structure for the tendrils to climb.
Keep the compost consistently moist during active growth, particularly while the plant is flowering or carrying fruit. Do not leave the pot standing in water.
Feed regularly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Change to a high-potassium feed once flower buds begin to develop.
Place the plant in a warm and bright position with good ventilation. Plants grown under glass may benefit from light shade during periods of intense summer heat.
The plant may be moved outside during settled warm weather after the risk of frost has passed. Protect it from strong winds and cool nights.
Overwinter in a bright, frost-free greenhouse or conservatory. A minimum temperature of approximately 12–15°C is recommended for reliable winter survival and continued growth.
Reduce watering during winter while ensuring that the root ball does not dry out completely.
Fruiting in the UK
Purple Maracuya can flower and produce fruit in the UK when provided with sustained warmth, strong light and sufficient maturity.
Flowers remain open for a relatively short period and may benefit from hand pollination under glass.
Fruit production is possible in a heated greenhouse or conservatory, but the number of fruit and successful ripening cannot be guaranteed.
