Passiflora ligularis is an Andean climbing fruit plant grown for its ornamental flowers and sweet orange fruit.
Sweet Granadilla produces slender climbing stems with broad, heart-shaped green leaves and coiling tendrils. Mature plants develop decorative white and purple flowers followed by rounded fruit with a firm orange shell.
The inside contains translucent aromatic pulp surrounding edible dark seeds. The flavour is sweet and generally less acidic than many other passionfruits.
The fruit is commonly eaten fresh or used in juices, desserts and drinks throughout Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and neighbouring regions.
In the UK, Sweet Granadilla is best grown in a greenhouse or conservatory where it can receive warmth, bright light and protection from frost.

Growing Advice
Grow your Sweet Granadilla in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-draining compost. Provide a strong climbing frame, trellis or horizontal wires.
Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth, but avoid leaving the roots standing in water.
Feed regularly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Change to a high-potassium feed when flower buds begin to develop.
Place the plant in a bright position protected from intense midday greenhouse sun. Sweet Granadilla originates from tropical highland environments and may struggle during prolonged periods of excessive heat.
Good ventilation and moderate temperatures are particularly important during summer.
Overwinter in a bright, frost-free greenhouse or conservatory. Keeping the plant above approximately 10–12°C is recommended, although warmer conditions will support more consistent growth.
Reduce watering during winter while avoiding complete drying of the root ball.
Fruiting in the UK
Sweet Granadilla requires plant maturity, consistent warmth, good light and successful pollination before fruit can develop.
Hand pollination may improve fruit set under glass. Growing more than one genetically different seedling may also improve pollination.
Fruit production is possible in a greenhouse or conservatory but cannot be guaranteed in the UK.
