Tibetan Lhasa is a productive chilli variety grown for its long, slender fruit and extended cropping period.

The plant develops a tall, branching habit with green foliage and small white flowers. These are followed by hanging peppers that begin green before ripening to a deep red colour.

The peppers have a direct, medium-hot heat and can be used fresh or dried. They are suitable for sauces, pastes, stir-fries, curries and chilli powder.

In the UK, Tibetan Lhasa grows well in a greenhouse or polytunnel but can also be grown in a large container in a warm and sheltered patio position.

Growing Advice

Grow your Tibetan Lhasa Chilli in fertile, well-draining compost in a warm and sunny position. Move the plant into a larger container as it develops to provide sufficient root space and improve fruit production.

Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth. Avoid prolonged waterlogging and repeated periods of severe dryness, particularly while the plant is flowering or developing fruit.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during early growth. Change to a high-potassium tomato feed once flowers or young peppers appear.

The plant can develop tall, widely branching stems and may require support with canes or ties, particularly once carrying fruit.

Plants grown outside should only be placed outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Choose a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds.

Tibetan Lhasa is usually grown as an annual in the UK but may sometimes be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position.

Fruiting in the UK

Tibetan Lhasa can fruit successfully in the UK when provided with sufficient warmth and strong light.

Fruit can be harvested while green or allowed to ripen fully to red. Regular harvesting can encourage the plant to continue producing flowers and peppers.
